The Church's Teachings
Catholics are asked to fast from food and drink for sixty minutes before receiving Holy Communion except in very special cases. Medicine and water does not break the fast.
Holy Communion may be received again at a second Eucharistic Celebration within the same day.
Baptisms are by appointment. The baptism should normally take place within a few weeks of the birth of the child. There should be "a well founded hope that the child will be brought up in the Catholic Religion", and at least one God-parent should be a practising Catholic. Please contact Fr Lannon before the birth of the child to talk things through.
Marriage is by appointment. All necessary civil requirements need to be completed before a wedding can take place in Church. Diocesan law requires a minimum of six months notice before a wedding takes place. Please contact Fr Lannon as soon as possible.
The Sacrament of the Sick is available on request to those with serious health problems. The Catholic Catechisms states that this Sacrament is "intended to strengthen those who are being tried by illness". If you go to hospital, you or a relation should inform the nursing staff on your arrival that you are a Roman Catholic and want the Catholic Chaplain informed of your presence.
Requiem Mass or a Funeral Service, followed by burial or cremation, is available on request when a Catholic dies. Do please note however that funeral arrangements, which are usually made by the Funeral Director, may also have to fit in with the availability of the priest. Liturgical rules do not permit flowers to remain on the coffin during the service. It is not usual among Catholics to play secular music during the Church's liturgical celebrations.
Catholics are asked to keep each Friday as a "Day of Penance". Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of Fasting and Abstinence or Penance.
Occasionally Services may have to be cancelled or times altered at short notice.
