Born in Preston. Educated Christian Brothers . Left Leeds Seminary 21.3.1903 to St Mary’s Oldham. He spent himself for his parish and left it a model one. Heart failure developed during his last years at Billington no doubt accentuated by his zealous over anxiety and he found it necessary to retire to Fairhavan. After a short time his retirement resolved itself into a long and weary bedridden struggle with heart failure. Those who had the privilege of knowing him intimately appreciated his retiring disposition and rejoiced in the staunchness of his friendship. Such men are rare because they are often unknown. Such was Fr Walmsley.

WALSH THOMAS

Born 7.7.1858
Ordained 1886
Died 1930

Born at Ballinaggart Tipperary, educated at the Monastery of Mt Mellary and Waterford, and ordained in Salford Cathedral 1886. He spent nearly one third of a century in the very centre of Manchester. He felt the position of his church provided an unique penitentiary - at morning noon and night he was at the disposal for the confessional and in Lent he made extra facilities in the way of a continuous mission with mid-day sermons. The Blessed Sacrament exposed or hidden was to be worshipped by tired business men and women. Never will one forget the spontaneous crowds who flocked to recite aloud the rosary of Our Blessed Lady in his church on Armistice Day. Facilities for visitors were arranged by a Sunday Mass at noon - a privilege which he deplored until he death was taken away on account of abuses. His crowning joy was the freedom from debt and solemn dedication of his historic church in May 1926. He loved his school and he was chosen by the Catholic School Managers to represent them on the Local Education Committee. In a way all his own he courted and not infrequently helped the civic authorities whom he regarded as within the purview of his parish. For many years he was the Chief Marshall of our great Whit Friday Procession. In 1917 he was made a Canon of the Cathedral Chapter. In some sense he was cosmopolitan - the resident population is comparatively small, the parish was augmented by business people callers of all classes, hotel visitors and at one time he counted the patients of the old Royal Infirmary in his flock.

WREN PATRICK

Born 26.8.1870
Ordained 6.8.1896
Died 1926

Born at Templeglantine in the diocese of Limerick. When he was 13 years of age, his family came over to England and settled in Blackburn. For a while he attended a Technical School with the object of becoming a Civil Engineer. At the age of twenty, he obeyed the call. Educated at Salford Catholic Grammar School where he took his place like St Ignatius before him, a grown man, amongst mere boys, to master the rudiments of Latin and Greek. At Ushaw he obtained his degree of B.A. Sent to Rome to pursue his philosophical and theological studies with high prospects of a distinguished scholastic career. Ill health compelled him to return home. Two years later, he went back to Ushaw and was ordained priest at Salford Cathedral. For a number of years, he served as Curate at St Hubert’s Great Harwood with an intermission of two years at Our Lady’s Prestwich. Returning to St Hubert’s he took a great part in the establishing and building of the new mission of St Wulstan’s. When St Wulstan’s was formally opened as a separate Mission in 1913 he became its first Rector. 1916 Rector St Boniface Lower Broughton where he built a new church and re-modelled the schools at a cost of over £6,000. 1925 Ill health forced him to the Nursing Sisters in Bristol where he died. He had a tremendous driving force of energy zeal and unfaltering will. His manner was grave and serious, stern almost, though he was blessed with a saving sense of humour and his serious air clothed him with a dignity that was wholly unconscious. His character had an inner core of such sweetness and humility that an occasional glimpse of it in movements of accidental self revelation made one feel ashamed. Children loved him and sinners leaned upon him but he was perhaps at his best in his assiduous care of the sick.
