Born in Crediton, Devonshire. Received into the Church when a young man by Canon Hobson of Exeter. Commenced his studies for the priesthood with the Canon Regulars at Bodmin. Later aspired to join Dean Woods' Congregation and for the purpose, entered St John's Seminary Waterford. After the Dean's death, he was adopted by the Salford Diocese and completed his theological studies at Leeds Seminary. Ordained at Ampleforth Abbey by Bishop John Vaughan.

1917 Curate to Fr R Smith at St Joseph's Nelson.
Mount Carmel Salford.
1921 St Mary's Heaton Norris

Fr Gay was on his annual vacation and apparently in good health. He had undertaken the services at the Sacred Heart Church Exeter to allow the parish priest to offer Mass at a neighbouring church and sang the late Mass. Towards evening, when actually preparing his sermon for service, he was found unconscious and inspite of every attention in a few hours passed away. Fr Gay was a serious minded priest, intent on all his duties, even camping out with Boy Scouts under his care, but his activities extended beyond the parish where he was situated and many of the Catholic Women's League and others will remember his literary gifts displayed in lectures which he gave at the Cenacle Convent. His funeral took place at Crediton but a solemn Requiem was offered at Heaton Norris in the presence of the Bishop. Sources:

GIBLIN BERNARD MARY

Born 19.5.1911
Ordained 6.12.1937
Died 10.2.1939

At the early age of 27, and in the first year of his priesthood, Fr Giblin died after an illness of only 2 days. Born at Droylsden Educated at St Anne's Fairfield and St Gregory's Central School Ardwick. Studied for the priesthood at St Bede's College (1926-1930) and ordained by Bishop Henshaw at the College. He was given temporary work at SS Peter and Paul's Bolton. In February 1938 he was sent on loan to the Diocese of Shrewsbury being appointed to Peter's Ludlow. There he remained until September when he was transferred to St Joseph's Stockport. Though never of robust constitution he entered wholeheartedly into every activity of school and college. He liked sport but could just as quickly go to his desk and become engrossed in the deeper things of life. Good ability consistent industry and the gift of method combined to attain for him invariably a high standard of success marked by solidity rather than brilliance. The same solidity was a feature of his piety at once profound and unobtrusive. He would quietly slip away at times to visit the Blessed Sacrament or to perform the Way of the Cross but he will always best be remembered for his love of our Blessed Lady in which he imitated his saintly patron. Six times he visited her shrine at Lourdes. Each pilgrimage intensified his devotion to the Virgin Mother. To his companions he would speak of her with simple sincerity as of a most intimate friend. Great must have been his consolation at being called by his Creator on the Vigil of the Feast of our Lady of Lourdes. His life was short but rich in merit. He quickly impressed his professors and fellow students by his singleness of purpose, his manifest ambition to co-operate loyally in everything that went to making him a fervent priest. Sources:

Born in Ardwick Manchester. First years of school life spent at St Augustine's Granby Row under the care of the reverend and well beloved Canon George Richardson. At the age of 13, entered St Bede's College, and commenced his studies for the Priesthood. He soon showed that he was of notable abilities not only in the classroom but also in the various activities of the playing fields and the recreation rooms. he had a great love for and appreciation of the beauty of English literature, a gift which became more and more useful to him as years passed on. He proved himself a successful teacher for he had the art of inspiring the boys with enthusiasm for study largely owing to a clearness of teaching which made difficulties disappear.

1913 Made Prefect of Studies and in 1916 he became Rector
1920 Due to the high quality of work done, recognition by Board of Education of St Bede's as one of the public schools of our country. This was an important gain as it placed secondary education within the reach of large members of Catholic boys who otherwise would have had no chance of obtaining it. The College was enlarged and completed in 1934.

Monsignor Gonne was a good preacher. In 1925 he preached the Lent in Rome and in 1936 he was the Lenton preacher at the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes in New York. He wrote "The Fringe of the Eternal" and also three plays, a Passion Play, a Nativity Play and a Life of St Patrick and it is agreed by all that the Passion Play especially contains scenes of high dramatic intensity and reveals a mind of deep and true spirituality. He drowned whilst swimming at Rossall Blackpool aged 59. Sources:

William Gornall was born in Darwen on 27th December 1937 and was subsequently baptised in the Church OP England. Bill began his studies for the Anglican ministry at Ely Theological College, completing them at the Community QC the Resurrection at Mirfield. 14s: was ordained for the Anglican ministry in 1964. He spent most of his thirty years serving in parishes in the Diocese Blackburn and spent his last years before retirement in Sheffield. It was after his retirement that Bill received instruction in the Faith and was received into full communion with the Catholic Church at Maltby in the Diocese of Hallam, before moving to live in Clitheroe. After completing part of the Ordination Course for former Anglican Clergy, he was ordained Deacon by Bishop Patrick Kelly at St Charles', Rishton on the Eve of the Feast of Corpus Christi, 9th June 1996. Due to increasing problems with his health, Bill felt he was not ready to go forward to priesthood. He was given leave to accept an invitation to live with the parish clergy of St George's Catholic Church in Worcester, where he served as deacon from the beginning of August 1997. Sadly his health became progressively worse and he was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia early last December, when he began a course of chemotherapy at Ronksworth Hospital and he died on Good Friday, 1998. His short time at St George's brought great fulfilment to him and he was deeply appreciated by the clergy and parishioners. The body of Rev William Gornall was received into St George's Church, Worcester, on Thursday 16th April with concelebrated Mass. The Requiem Mass for his eternal repose was celebrated at St Joseph's, Darwen on Friday 17th April at 1.30pm, followed by interment at his parents' grave in Darwen. Sources:

His health gave way under the strain and worry he imposed upon himself in order to eliminate the debt on the parish and after four years on medical advice, he had to ask for a rest in the hope of regaining fully the strength he had lost. that hope was never realised and after a short respite from parish work he assumed the responsibilities of St Wilfrid's Parish and Deanery, Hulme. The task proved too much for his enfeebled state, which growing seriously worse, forced him into retirement a few months before his death. Retired in May 1938 to his sister's home in Southport where he died in November 1938. Sources:
