FRACASSI GAETANO

Born 18 April 1876
Ordained 1898
Died 2 July 1940

Born at Pescarolo, Cremona in Italy, Fr Gaetano Fracassi first appears in the diocese when he is listed in the 1905 Almanac, placed between two priests who were ordained in 1898. In the 1906 Almanac he is placed between priests ordained in 1904. This may be a clue that he might have been ordained in 1898 for a diocese other than salford, and began work in this diocese in 1904. He was sent as assistant to St Bridget, Bradford, Manchester 1904-1906, and then to St Mary, Failsworth 1906-1911, and finally to St Ann, Oldham, 1911-1913. In Summer 1913 he became rector of the combined mission of Stacksteads and Newchurch. He remained at St Joseph, Stacksteads, when Newchurch was detached as the separate parish of St Peter in 1915. In 1922 he went as parish priest to St Alban, Ancoats, Manchester. Early in the Second World War, he was interned and transported to Canada, but en route the ship Arandora Star was torpedoed and he drowned in mid Atlantic.

Note: A Fr Cajetan Fracassi is listed in the 1899 Almanac as "unattached", and in the 1900 Almanac as being Chaplain to the Good Shepherd Convent, Blackley. No mention of a priest of this name appears in either the Almanac of the Catholic Directory for the years 1901-1904. When Fr Gaetano appears in the 1905 Almanac, his parish entry lists him as Fr G Farcassi, but the clergy list as noted above gives his Christian name in full as Cajetan. Whether this was a mistake by the editor, or whether both sets of entries refer to the same priest is unclear.
